PACKING & TRANSPORTATION

Packing of Litchis

Sulphured Litchis

After harvest of the litchis clusters, these are protected from dehydration by covering with the leaves, a wet cloth or a plastic sheet and transported to the packing house.

These, the fruits are detached from their peduncles leaving a stalk less than 5mm. All cracked, punctured and immature fruits are discarded.

The Fruits are then placed in aerated crates in a sealed container where they are fumigrated with sulphur dioxide.

The Litchis are placed in 2kg cartons with ventilation holes

The cartons are individually weighed in order to make up the weight. These are then stacked and palletised for despatched by air.

Export Fresh Litchis

During the last six years Mauritius has started exporting non-sulphured fresh litchis. The price is more remunerative than for sulphured litchis and are packed in 4kg cartons.

The market is still new but is likely to expand. Size of cartons and other specifications depend on mutual agreement netween exporter and importer.

The fruits still attached to the branch (about 30cm long) are wrapped in plastic sheets and placed in cartons.
